Film Summer School Juniors
Do you want to learn how to make films? Screen and Film School presents this fun, creative and practical filmmaking Summer School for 15-17 year olds. This 2-week course will introduce you to digital cameras, an editing suite, the production process and working alongside like-minded creative people as you create and edit your first film.
On the Film Summer School Juniors, you will be taught by industry professionals who will show you how to bring your ideas and projects to life. You will form crews with your fellow students and, with our guidance, will plan your films to be shot on DSLR. You will go through the process of filmmaking from script development to storyboard and then plan your shoot schedule.
The summer school will give you the unique opportunity to work with professional actors, allowing you to experience the world of filmmaking first hand. You will use industry standard equipment and be taught by our amazing tutors all of whom have extensive experience in the film and television industry. Summer school students will create their own story-line and script giving them the independence to decide their own short film content.

The summer school is a terrific opportunity for you to start building a strong portfolio to take onto higher education interviews, share with friends and family or kick-start your showreel on Vimeo and YouTube.

Course Specification
Mode of attendance: Part-time
Length of course: 2 weeks, 10am – 4pm
Campus delivery: Brighton
Start date: Monday 25th July 2022
End date: Friday 5th August 2022
Progression
Students can progress onto the 3-year BA Hons Filmmaking or BA Hons Film Business & Entrepreneurship after completing the relevant Level 3 qualification.
Course Fees
Because we’re an industry-led practical film school, we’re uniquely positioned to offer outstanding value and quality to all our students. Course fees are currently £499 – deposit of £100 is required to secure your place on the course.
This is a self-funded course.
At Screen and Film School we believe that there should be an even playing field and equality of opportunity. That is why we have Access and Participation bursaries available, removing barriers for young people from low-income households and encouraging diversity within the next generation of filmmakers.
The eligibility criteria for these bursaries are as follows:
- You’re in or you’ve recently left local authority care
Or a member of your household receives any of the following:
- Income Support or Universal Credit
- Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) or Universal Credit
- Personal Independence Payment (PIP) and either ESA or Universal Credit
- Any other income assessed benefits

DAY 2 SOUND RECORDING + LIGHTING

tension / motif’s.
Sound Recording Demonstration
Groups of 3 – Capturing clean sound; recording dialogue, atmos, soundscape
Regroup, listen & feedback.
Story/Script: Any idea’s from students for short film?
Looking at SFS lighting kit.
Basic Lighting Introduction; High contrast, Low key, Shadows, Style
3 point lighting set up; Shoot simple Interviews using Clapperboard.
Introduction to Final Cut Pro
DAY 3 CUT IN CAMERA + SIMPLE EDIT + STORY
Re-cap Day 2.
Short film viewing.
Groups of 4: Plan and shoot a short chronological sequence in ten shots; the
invisible cut & dynamic shot sequences
Story & Character; Looking at Narrative Structure and the Role of Character (to move story along). Joseph Campbell’s Theory of Mythology
Exercises to generate story material and start writing in small groups/pairs
Editing; Assemble and view mornings shot sequences in FCPX
DAY 4 MAKING DRAMA & DIRECTING ACTORS
Re-cap Day 3.
Split group: Group A – Directing actors in studio with script.
Directing approaches & methods; etiquette on set; shoot short sequence.
Group B – Developing story ideas to pitch to group
Group changeover
Story pitch to group & vote
DAY 5 EDITING and PRE-PRODUCTION
Re-cap day 4
Pre Production for chosen shorts; storyboard, schedule, shot lists, props, casting, sourcing needs
Edit material made during the week in FCPX; group viewing of edits
Re-grouping; final checks – what do we need for next week? Crew up / roles.
DAY 6 SHOOT BEGINS!
Tie up any Pre-Production;
Final Casting
Set dress & lighting
Warm up shoot for Crews A & B (1.5 hours each to shoot cutaways / inserts)
