12 Days of Christmas: Week 1 Unwrapped

11 December, 2020

Welcome to Screen and Film School Brighton’s 12 Days of Christmas: Week 1 Unwrapped!

On each of the week days leading up to Christmas we’ve been releasing our recorded Masterclasses, Tech Talks, and Tales From The Front Line sessions on our student platform Screen and Film School Connect.

As the weather gets colder and the nights grow even longer, this is the perfect opportunity for our students to get cosy and catch up with any sessions they might’ve missed over the semester, or just re-live the fantastic and thought-provoking conversations we’ve had with our guests, including Elena Andreicheva, Charlotte Bruus Christensen, Gareth Evans and, of course, Russell T. Davies!

But don’t worry- if you aren’t able to access our exclusive student platform we aren’t forgetting about you! Each week we’ll be releasing a series of clips from these sessions right here. Grab a cup of cocoa, put your feet up and relax as you catch up with this week’s highlights.

Day 1

On the first day of Christmas, SFS Brighton gave to me……
A Tale with Frank McCabe of LEO Learning!

We were so happy to be able to kick our 12 Days off with a fantastic Tales from the Front Line with Frank McCabe, Executive Producer of Moving Image at LEO Learning!

We had a great time chatting to Frank about what LEO have been up to during Covid and how they’ve had to change their practices and content during these strange times!

Day 2

On the second day of Christmas, SFS Brighton gave to me……
Warwick’s Grip Tech Talk,
and a Tale with Frank McCabe of LEO Learning!

Day 2 saw us bring you Warwick Drucker’s Key Grip Tech Talk, hosted by our very own in-house technician Adam Collins! It was fascinating to hear all about the role of a Key Grip and how they work with the other departments.

Day 3

On the third day of Christmas, SFS Brighton gave to me……
Directing with Andrea,
Warwick’s Grip Tech Talk,
and a Tale with Frank of LEO Learning!

Day 3 was the release of the first of our Masterclass recordings, with the wonderful film and television director, Andrea Harkin! We learned so much from her – how she works with actors, the programmes she joined to get ahead of the game, and how she keeps a sense of wellbeing in the industry.

Day 4

On the fourth day of Christmas, SFS Brighton gave to me……
Giri/Haji’s Joe,
Directing with Andrea,
Warwick’s Grip Tech Talk,
and a Tale with Frank of LEO Learning!

Joe Barton kicked off this semester’s Masterclass series, joining us on a very rainy day in Brighton where we got to learn all about his writing process, upcoming projects, and how he wanted season 2 of Giri/Haji to play out, had it been taken up by Netflix! He also dishes on the pitching meeting he had with J.J. Abrams, and shows off the hat he’s received whilst filming his next feature, Invasion, starring Riz Ahmed!

Day 5

On the fifth day of Christmas, SFS Brighton gave to me……
Festival top tips,
Giri/Haji’s Joe,
Directing with Andrea,
Warwick’s Grip Tech Talk,
and a Tale with Frank of LEO Learning!

To wrap up (no pun intended!) this week’s 12 Days of Christmas, we released our recording of Tim Brown’s Festival Tech Talk, which is a must-see for all our budding producers!

We invited Cinecity’s Co-Director Tim Brown to give us his top tips on submitting to festivals, including choosing the right festivals for your films and creating a strategy for submissions. Did you catch the New Voices category at this year’s Cinecity? 5 of the selected films were from graduates of Screen and Film School Brighton!

See you back here next week for Screen and Film School Brighton’s 12 Days of Christmas: Week 2 Unwrapped!
