A students guide to UCAS
Screen and Film School Brighton’s student blogger Lauren Louise shares her advice for students applying for degree courses through UCAS.
Applying to university is a simple process that can be quite daunting if you don’t know where to start.
To start with, you will have to give a few details about yourself. Then set up an account with a username and password along with your security questions. If you’re applying through a school or college you can also add a buzzword your school, college or centre gave you too. Ask your college for this!
When applying through UCAS you will need these things:
- Your qualifications
- Employment history
- A personal statement
- A reference
Your reference and personal statement will help the universities get to know you a lot better, so make sure to really showcase who you are and why you are interested in your chosen course and university. If you’re worried about writing your personal statement there are tons of personal statement templates online to help you on your way.
Whilst filling out your UCAS application you may also have to apply for Student Finance separately from the gov website. It’s pretty easy and will walk you through a series of questions about where you’re applying, your parent/guardian’s income and what finance you need. It usual takes a while to come back so make sure you do this early.
You can apply for up to five different university choices. This will be set at different application fees. The fee is £20 for one choice, or £26 for more than one choice. It’s always good to apply to more than one university as sometimes you won’t meet the requirements, or courses can fill up quickly, or maybe you’re applying a little later than the average student (like I did!) The other universities cannot see where else you have applied and it won’t affect your application.
It’s important to know that UCAS have multiple application deadlines depending on where you are applying. For most undergraduate degrees, like at Screen and Film School, the deadline for equal consideration has been extended to Friday 29th January 2021 @ 18:00pm. If you miss this deadline or don’t make your initial choices you can apply with UCAS Extra until June 30th 2021 and still get onto some brilliant courses as universities prepare for this. If you don’t make this deadline you will then be entered into UCAS Clearing where you can apply and get accepted ready for the academic year and up until October 19th 2021.
The best thing to do when applying is to start. Once you’ve done that everything begins to fall into place and you will find yourself onto new horizons.
