Screen and Film School Birmingham announce new building

22 March, 2021

Screen and Film School are delighted to officially announce the home for Birmingham students: Rea Studios.

As the very first specialist film school in Birmingham, Rea Studios on Floodgate Street, in the heart of Digbeth is set to become the shared home of Screen and Film School Birmingham and Performers College, Birmingham. Directly opposite the striking BIMM music institute, the cluster of colleges will provide an emerging creative community to bolster an existing creative hub in the city.

Students will be provided with the professional standard facilities to both work and study in, whilst also providing the opportunity to collaborate with students from Performers College for their productions.

The large warehouse is set to be transformed into a purpose-built creative learning environment for the new generation of Birmingham filmmakers. For the first time in the city, a specialist film school will be offering students the opportunity to learn all about the industry, from the industry.

Rea Studios will house fully spec’d edit suites with industry standard software such as Avid, Adobe Suite, DaVinci Resolve studio and Final Cut X, two mac rooms, a film studio, screening room and an open plan communal reception area providing everything our students will need to creatively flourish. Students will be stepping directly into the industry from day one of their undergraduate degree course.

Film students can literally follow in the footsteps of director Steven Spielberg who chose Digbeth as a location for his feature film Ready Player One and they will also benefit from being at the heart of Birmingham’s creative sector. The Custard Factory houses a multitude of small independent artistic businesses. With television production companies Optomen and North One based in the area, and the planned investment of Mercian Studios, we are positioned to give our students the best access to the local industry.

Screen and Film School Birmingham’s College Principal, Hannah Stevenson said: “We are bringing something new to the city. A film school that is 70% practical and 100% industry focused. I am excited to be shaping the next generation of filmmakers in the heart of the city’s creative hub. Digbeth is the go-to destination for screen industry so I can’t think of a better location.”

Our very first in-person Open Day is set to take place on the 29th May. Attendees will have the opportunity to tour the perimeter of the building and see it taking shape as it’s constructed into their future filmmaking home, as well as get to know the local area, including a tour of recognisable filming locations, meet the team and participate in a practical workshop.

We cannot wait to welcome our 2021 students to Rea Studios this September and help them kickstart their careers in filmmaking in one of the most creative and vibrant cities in the UK.
