Screen and Film School Brighton Head of Year announced as the new College Principal of BIMM Institute Berlin’s Screen and Film Faculty

10 February, 2022

Screen and Film School Brighton would like to say thank you and the very best of luck to our lecturer and Head of Second Year, Alex Hobden. Alex has relocated to Berlin to launch BIMM Institute Berlin’s brand-new Screen and Film Faculty, where they will be delivering the BA (Hons) Filmmaking.

This move will see Alex head up the new film-focused department as the College Principal, and BIMM Berlin are gearing up to welcome their very first group of students to the faculty later this year.

For the past ten years, Alex has been working in creative media production and education, lecturing in Film and TV Production and Cultural Theory at both Brighton and Chichester universities. Alongside this, he is also a freelance filmmaker with a portfolio of creative projects for local charities and organisations.

When asked about his time with Screen and Film School Brighton, and what he enjoys most about working in education, Alex had this to say:

“So much of what I enjoy about my job in education is the students. It is the students who really set the tone of a college or university and I firmly believe that we have the best students in education. It’s a terrible cliché but there really is no greater feeling than watching a student progress through their course, overcoming immense challenges and emerging successful having grown personally and professionally into someone is ready to take on the world. I really do feel like a proud parent at times like those.”

Here’s what Alex is most looking forward to within his new role in Germany:

“Running the Screen and Film Faculty in Berlin is a dream come true. As this will be our first year running in Berlin we have the fantastic opportunity to set up a new facility from scratch – a brand-new building with cutting edge, industry-standard hardware and software. I am immensely excited to see what our new students can do when they get their hands on it, whether they are experimental moving image artists or they aspire to make the next Marvel film.”

Head of Education at Screen and Film School Brighton, Kate Mapes, spoke for everyone at the Film School when she said:

“Alex has been an indispensable part of the Screen and Film School family for the last four and a half years, demonstrating incredible dedication to his students, whilst working his way up the ranks from lecturer to Head of Year 1 and onto Head of Year 2 of our BA (Hons) Filmmaking degree. We are of course sad to see him moving onto pastures new, however we feel a great sense of pride in Alex’s progression into this new role at BIMM Berlin’s Screen and Film Faculty. We wish him the very best of luck with this new chapter and look forward to collaborating with his students in the future.”

On behalf of everyone at Screen and Film School, we would like to say Auf Wiedersehen und viel Glück to Alex. We look forward to welcoming you back for a visit in the future.
