Screen and Film School students attend BSC Expo 2020

12 February, 2020

Screen and Film School students travelled from Brighton to Battersea last month to attend the UK’s premier dedicated Film and TV production exhibition: BSC Expo 2020.

The two-day event is a recognised fixture in the industry calendar, and showcases a variety of the latest kit from suppliers around the world. BSC Expo is also home to a number of in-depth seminars, panels, and presentations from leading industry manufacturers and experts including RED/Dolby, Panavision, and ARRI. The seminar topics for 2020 ranged from LED lighting experiments, to practical colour science, and discussions on the changing world of shooting formats and lens choices.

Students and graduates were able to network with film professionals and experiment with the latest equipment and technology in the industry alongside other like-minded creatives, as well as receive first hand advice on how to make their mark in the industry as young professionals. The panel “Getting Started” saw an experienced group of DP’s, operators, camera assistants, and gaffers in conversation about how they took their first steps into the industry, whereas “Sustainability in Film and TV” examined how crew and suppliers of film equipment can respond to the current climate emergency- both important topics for our students to consider in the years leading up to their graduations and beyond.

Screen and Film School’s technician manager, Ben Cookesley, believes the event is a great opportunity for students, no matter their area of interest in film. “The BSC Expo is a great opportunity for our students to go and see all the new and amazing equipment being showcased,” he said. “Whether you’re interested in camera, lighting or grip, it is an awesome place to see, discuss and play with some very exciting equipment and also a great place to do some networking too.”

Valuable connections were made with industry leaders such as Kino Flo Lighting Systems, and Cinelabs, who offered a future tour of their lab and a detailed look at the process of developing and scanning film to our students. Other lucky students walked away with impressive raffle prizes, including an iPad and a Cinelex SKYNODE Receiver. Final year student Curtis Godfrey had a successful trip, telling us, “I had a great time visiting BSC Expo, it was amazing to be able to get a hands on experience with the latest grip, lighting and cameras. I’ll be back next year!”
