Screen and Film School to open in Birmingham

16 October, 2020

Birmingham now offering top-class education to budding filmmakers and industry professionals

The long-established Screen and Film School is opening a new state-of-the-art campus in the city next September 2021 and is in the process of appointing a College Principal from the ever-prospering film industry.

One of the creative capitals of the UK film industry, Birmingham is home to a number of BBC facilities, and is one of the filming locations for the award-winning Peaky Blinders as well as a string of international cinema hits.

The city and its surrounding areas offer a wide variety of shooting environments and backdrops. The eclectic juxtaposition of classic meets contemporary, industry meets nature, concrete meets glass and coal meets fusion – provide the perfect canvas for aspiring filmmakers to create any place, at any time, and tell their stories.

The striking and unique architecture of areas such as the Jewellery Quarter have attracted big Directors such as Steven Spielberg, who used Birmingham as the location for his cinema smash Ready Player One. Other Birmingham filmed blockbusters include Kingsman: The Golden Circle, Jawbone, Stan & Ollie and The Girl with All the Gifts.

Add in iconic television legends such as Peaky Blinders, Line of Duty, Spooks, Boon, and The Game and it’s no wonder that Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight is currently working on plans to open an expanded studio complex in the area.

Being at the heart of all this activity provides Screen and Film School Birmingham students with a huge advantage when making all-important industry connections. The city is a place where innovation, creativity and technology come together amidst a variety of businesses including Maverick Television, BskyB, North One, and ITV.

A cultural hub, Birmingham attracts creative industries from across the world, from film, to art, clothing, jewellery design, performance, dance, and theatre. Re-imagined former industrial districts such as the Custard Factory now house these emerging and unique businesses and provide central hubs of simmering creativity across the city.

Mix this with a vast array of galleries, museums, cinemas, theatres and more than £80 million spent annually on developing culture in the area, and it’s easy to see why Birmingham has become the number one choice for those moving out of London.

Alongside the vital industry connections, students will make through their course, the student experience is also very important when making choices of where to study.

Due to its former international industry and connections, Birmingham is known for its warmth and down to earth people, an eclectic mix from all walks of life, something sure to grow even further once the new HS2 rail line opens in a few years, making the capital a mere 52 minutes away.

Consider too Birmingham’s renowned arts scene, fashion and costume design, animation, film and television production companies, digital media, and over 6,000 tech firms, and it’s no wonder that Birmingham became the location for the digitally dedicated ‘Silicone Canal’ district.

Then there are the vibrant festivals and nightlife, with over 50 festivals annually including Birmingham Film Festival, Flat Pack Film Festival, Birmingham Pride, the Fierce Art Festival, and the International Jazz Festival. With unique bars and pubs, restaurants, a dedicated gay village, the Chinese quarter, and some of the best nightclubs in the UK, students attending the new Screen and Film School will certainly never run out of things to enjoy.

Screen and Film School Executive Principal, Dara Kilkenny said:

“We couldn’t be more excited to announce our latest Screen and Film School in Birmingham. Following the success of our locations in Brighton and Manchester we’re continuing to expand our offer to budding talent with a passion for cinema in the creative centre that is Birmingham.”
