MA Mentor

James Oldham is a multi-award-winning cinematographer who's been making waves in the industry for over 15 years. Recognised as the Best Emerging Cinematographer by the British Society of Cinematographers in 2015, his exceptional work on the short film Maggie earned him Best Cinematography at MANIFF 2023.

James has brought his talent to feature films like Prancer: A Christmas Tale for Universal Studios/Sky, England is Mine, Eaten By Lions, and more. His short films like Hungry Joe, Hollow, and CTRL Z> have garnered numerous accolades, showcasing his versatile cinematographic skills.

He's currently attached to several short and long-form projects, which inform his teaching practice with practical tips and real-world applications. James also lectures in cinematography on the MA Screen & Film Production at Screen and Film School. Working with students allows him to relearn material with fresh eyes and build lasting relationships.

Looking ahead, James sees the MA programme playing a crucial role in shaping the next generation of industry professionals. His advice for aspiring cinematographers? "Go for it!"
